October 2016

Sarah travelled to the International Islamic University, Malaysia, to help run a workshop on use of the zebrafish as a model organism for research.

Davide gave a great talk in the departmental First Year Postgraduate Symposium.

Tanya's review 'Sculpting the labyrinth: morphogenesis of the developing inner ear', co-authored with Berta Alsina, is now published in Seminars in Cell and Developmental Biology.

September 2016

Congratulations to Ryan, who has submitted his thesis!

There was lots of interest in Wiebke Jahr's wonderful eduSPIM, an educational light-sheet microscope on loan from the Huisken lab, at Researchers' Night.  We also demonstrated some light-sheet movies of the developing ear.

Tanya visited the School of Biosciences at the University of Nottingham, and gave a talk on our analysis of the zebrafish inner ear using light-sheet microscopy.  It was interesting to hear from Andrew French about using machine learning for image analysis, and to see around the impressive Hounsfield facility for microCT imaging on the Sutton Bonington campus.

Sarah gave an excellent talk at the 53rd Inner Ear Biology Workshop in Montpellier, France, on her work on the zebrafish cloudy mutant, illustrated with plenty of beautiful light-sheet imaging.

At the beginning of the month, Tanya and Sarah were co-organisers for the 3rd International Conference on Light-Sheet Fluorescence Microscopy (LSFM 2016), which was held in BMS and at The Edge, University of Sheffield (31st Aug – 3rd Sept).  The meeting was a resounding success.  On the first day, BMS hosted a series of hands-on workshops, where we had no fewer than six light-sheet microscopes up and running in the department!  We welcomed 150 delegates from all over the world, including keynote speaker Hari Shroff (NIH).  The quality of presentations (talks and posters) was superb; special congratulations go to Sheffield students Karishma Chhabria (Chico lab, Bateson Centre) and Tania Mendonca (Physics/APS), who gave outstanding talks on their PhD work.

From the lab, Nick and Davide presented posters of their work, and former student Georgina Stooke-Vaughan also presented a poster on her postdoc work in the Woolner lab, University of Manchester.  See all the action on Twitter: #lsfm2016

August 2016

Tanya presented a poster and chaired a session at the joint Annual Meeting of the Society of Developmental Biology and International Society of Differentiation, Boston, MA, USA.  It was lovely to catch up with former PhD supervisor Chris Wylie at the meeting and later with Chris, Janet and the family at home in Vermont.  Read about Chris and Janet's lifetime achievement award here.

July 2016

BMS hosted the Genetics Society Medal Talk by Ottoline Leyser CBE FRS on 19th July.  Tanya now says goodbye to the Genetics Society Committee, after four years as Honorary Secretary.  End of an era!

Congratulations to Level 3 project student Cameron Lin, who won a Rob Clarke Abstract Award to present a poster at Physiology 2016 in Dublin, Ireland.

Elvira gave a talk on her project on Versicans in the zebrafish ear and in cancer progression at the 2nd MBE (Matrix Biology Europe) Conference, Athens, Greece.

May 2016

Tanya gave a talk at the workshop 'Linking Evolution and Development of the Auditory System' at the Institute for Advanced Study, Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg, Delmenhorst, Germany.
